It looks like dark-mode themes have finally taken off in the mainstream and become the default in many new apps and websites. The bright white text on a black background also feels like my eyes are being stabbed when reading it. Am I alone in this? Are all trendy designers kids with good vision?
Lately I've found myself watching a lot of recorded technical talks on YouTube. I prefer text for learning about something in detail, but I've found recorded talks more helpful when I want a broader overview of a topic, or if I want an intro to something outside my usual interests.
(They also mak...
I feel like this has come out of nowhere but shown up a lot recently. Weird.
There are certain blog-posts that I would rather not see at all in my feed. Is it possible to killfile a domain?
I am not sure how common it is in Silicon Valley, but in India following questions are very common and I really find it difficult to understand why interviewer is asking them and what exactly he expects to understand from me:
1. What are your hobbies? (this usually means non-tech hobbies if you h...
Hello! I look forward to finding out if this post does not belong on Lobste.rs. (Based on the if-the-tags-do-not-fit metric, it does not.)
My uncle passed away in early October, and his widow just posted that she asked Facebook to turn his page into a memorial page but, they haven't responded y...
I've seen several sites now that provide a light/dark mode that will change the background from e.g. white to black respectively, and alter the foreground text and other colours to match.
Would it be good to add this kind of feature to lobste.rs?
The idea of a dark mode for lobsters has been brought up in the past:
- https://github.com/lobsters/lobsters/issues/637
- https://github.com/lobsters/lobsters/issues/404
The recommended solution has generally been to use a user style. That's a gre...
It would be great is Lobsters supported “prefers-color-scheme: dark“. Is there a reason why this isn’t used? It’s such a simple thing to add.
Hubble Unmasks Universe’s “Invisible Glue” – Stellar Motions Reveal Dark Matter Secrets
(scitechdaily.com)
The Hubble Space Telescope’s longevity is an asset in gaining clarity about the universe’s invisible glue. When theory and observations favor different results, how can astronomers determine which one is more feasible? Increasing confidence in one theory over another oftentimes requires ...
Dark matter, making up 85% of all matter in the universe, remains elusive due to its invisible nature, studied only through its gravitational effects. Scientists, using theories of particle interaction and advanced AI algorithms, are peeling back layers of cosmic activity to isolate dark matter̵...
The app was on the front-page a few days ago. Today, I got an email stating that they just had a large investment. Curious, I checked out the pricing page to see how it makes money.<p>(I swear, this is not an ad, I'm not going through their "post us on social media" route, that just l...
Holographic Dark Energy: A New Model for Understanding the Universe’s Expansion
(scitechdaily.com)
Following the accelerated expansion discovery of the Universe, scientists introduced dark energy concepts, which faced issues like the cosmological constant problem. Researchers at IKBFU developed a holographic dark energy model based on quantum gravity, which views the Universe as a hologram. This ...
I’ve been a fan of Lobste.rs for its great community and invite-only model. Recently, I’ve been wondering if there are any modern alternatives out there—especially those that use a serverless architecture.<p>I'm particularly looking for open-source options or any unique takes that embrace scala...
Hi HN,<p>I'm one of the co-founders of PreCog AI, a project my friend and I started to make the best AI models more accessible. PreCog AI is a chatbot that automatically picks and answers with the best AI model for whatever task you throw at it.<p>We made PreCog public on Monday and are getting...
Hi Hackers! I am working on a problem on a code review tool for designers and have a use case I am trying to solve with GenAI but not able to solve well.
LLM models are trained on huge corpus of text, and many multimodal models also on images with text caption that can identify objects in the images...
I know I probably shouldn't read on my smartphone before going to sleep, but I do. My phone (a recent Pixel) has an OLED screen, so black pixels emit no light at all.<p>I would have hoped that dark mode would mean mobile apps for reading (e.g. Substack) would use a black background, but many of...
